• You tighten the ring (ring lid) on the jar with your fingertips until you feel resistance — do not tighten too firmly .

• The lid should make good contact with the glass , but the ring should not be too tight .

• Don't use full force or tools — just your hands, with light pressure.

Why not tighter?

• Air must be able to escape from the jar during heating.

• If you screw the lid on too tightly, the air won't escape. The mason jar won't vacuum properly, and both the lid and the rubber seal can warp or crack. Your jars may also leak during canning.

• Je draait de ring (ringdeksel) op het potje met je vingertoppen vast tot je weerstand voelt — niet stevig doordraaien.

• Het deksel moet goed contact maken met het glas, maar de ring mag niet te strak zitten.

• Gebruik geen volle kracht of gereedschap — alleen je handen, met lichte druk.

Waarom niet strakker?

• Tijdens het verhitten moet lucht uit het potje kunnen ontsnappen.

• Als je de deksel te strak draait, kan de lucht er niet uit.  De mason jar vacuümeert dan niet goed en zowel je deksel zelf als de rubberen ring kunnen dan vervormen of scheuren. Ook kunnen je potten gaan lekken tijdens het cannen.
