You tighten the ring (ring lid) on the jar with your fingertips until you feel resistance — do not tighten too firmly .
The lid should make good contact with the glass , but the ring should not be too tight .
Don't use full force or tools — just your hands, with light pressure.
Why not tighter?
Air must be able to escape from the jar during heating.
If you screw the lid on too tightly, the air won't escape. The mason jar won't vacuum properly, and both the lid and the rubber seal can warp or crack. Your jars may also leak during canning.
